PearlyWrites Yahoo Group

For any freelancer interested in receiving an email or daily digest with the open projects PearlyWrites receives, then please sign up at the PearlyWrites Yahoo Group.

Please note that if you are a new freelancer to the group, I would need to see samples or an online portfolio before approving membership. Also there are copies of the NDA and Independent Contractor Agreement available under files which I would need before any project details will be given.

Developing this group is a way to ensure all freelancers receive a message when there are open projects as well as to try and make management easier. Please make this group yours and feel free to share in the discussions and thoughts about freelancing.

Worked on New Book

Today I finally dedicated the entire day to working on my new book. I conducted research and began my outline of how I want the book set up.

It will be about Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona with many photographs and not too much writing. Yes, a second passion of mine is photography so when I was asked if I would be interested in a book where the majority of the book will be pictures, I jumped at the opportunity, as well as bought a new camera.

Of course I told a few local people about the book already and they made some snobby comments like, "Um, well hasn't that been done already?" Instead of responding back nastily, I just smiled and said, "Yes, probably but aren't there tons of books with the same story published and different character names?"

OK maybe that was a little snobby response back...but what is a new author to do? Be insulted before the book has been completed?

I did go to Barnes and Noble to check out my competition and there wasn't too many books. The concept of the publisher is a very unique one so I am hoping this will help with interest and book sales. I am also trying to feature places that other touring books have not covered.

Spoke to my publisher today as well to get a few questions answered like do I need signed releases and I never received the book building guide.

Two hours before the work week is over, or is it?

The Office

Many freelancers have a home office since they are the only employee. Setting up your home office takes vision and imagination if your home office is really suppose to be a bedroom. The size of my office is quite large and I am very happy with it and I EVEN get a large window to look out of!

So what happens when you are working and your neighbors and their kids are constantly outside playing with everything imaginable! From their 20 feet off the ground pick-up trucks exhaust to their car sound system as the bass is vibrating everything in my office to the ever popular let's fly a kite in the middle of the street!

What do you do? Do you go outside and tell them to try and be a little considerate? If I was still in Jersey, I would go outside and use a few choice words but I am finding in my new life in Arizona, they don't get it! Only once did I have to go to my neighbor who lived above us in Jersey and ask if he could keep the stampede of elephants running above my head down a bit. I wasn't even going to do it but my husband even looked at me and was like, "Is he having a fight or something up there?"

So yes, I can go to the local coffee shop or book store and do my work there BUT why should I? I live in a single family home on a nice block which is mostly quiet minus the neighbors who live next door to us. I guess we got the luck of the draw...

Professor Lisa is back!

After a few interviews at the College level to teach English, I can proudly say that Professor Lisa will be back in the classroom this Jan. 2007 in the Valley of the Sun.

I will be teaching ENG 101 and ENG 102 courses which are the first two required English classes for most college students. Yes, I will teach the proper methods of writing and research and distinguishing between true sources and not reliable sources when writing research papers.

If you don't mind the Jersey accent, stop by a class and check my teaching out in action. If anything, stop by to say hello!

I will receive an answer if I am an approved Vendor about the SES tutoring program around December 18.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Pay The Freelancers!

In the business world, I understand there are different payment schedules but what about when there is a rush or immediate need for service? Shouldn't this be rewarded with an on time payment?

Regardless of your career or status; freelancer, independent contractor, or employee, PAYMENT should always be made. Everyone works hard for their money and ignoring an invoice is disrespectful.

In the freelance world, I have learned having a collection agency to contact clients who feel the need not to pay for my services has worked. After 60 days, if services are not paid for, I contact my collection agency who then contacts the clients who decide not to pay for services agreed to.

Remember, with most communications through e-mail and IM, ALL conversations are journaled and the "he said - she said" game is no more.

Many freelancers require payments to be made up front, before any completed work is exchanged. This is a good rule as clients feel the need NOT to pay once the completed work is handed over to them.

What if you went to a store and asked, "Can I try this jacket out and pay you in a month?" What answer will the store give to you besides looking at you like you are out of your mind!

The same goes for conducting business with a freelancer. Once work is completed and exchanged, PAY YOUR INVOICES!
